Welcome to Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH). We are one of the four schools under the College of Health Sciences (MakCHS). Here at MakSPH we work to excel in public health training, research and service provision.

Our main campus is located within the Makerere University College of Health Sciences on Mulago Hill, within the Mulago National Referral Hospital. We also have premises in Kololo and Kasangati.

The school boasts of a vibrant, dynamic and knowledgeable team of bio-medical experts, social scientists, nutritionists, health systems specialists, social workers and experts from many other fields. Our main responsibilities rotate around research, community service including consultancy and training/teaching. The school has undergraduate and post-graduate courses, short skills-based courses, research projects and community service projects.

We at MakSPH are committed to providing quality training to produce highly competent public health professionals that are able to tackle public health challenges within our communities. The school has four departments namely; Department of Health Policy, Planning and Management, Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Department of Community Health and Behavioural Sciences. It also houses the Regional Centre for Quality of Health Care.

Board / Committees
 

  • The MakSPH Management Committee

The management committee chaired by the Dean comprises of Chairs of Departments and the School Administrator. It sits once a month and is responsible for the running and organisation of MakSPH.

  • The MakSPH Board

The MakSPH Board is the supreme decision-making body of the school on academic, administrative and finance issues. It is chaired by the Dean and its membership is all academic staff members.

  • The MakSPH Finance Committee

The Finance committee, chaired by the Dean comprises Chairs of Department, the School Administrator, the accountant and a member from the University bursar’s office. The accountant acts as the secretary to the committee. The committee acts on behalf of the MakSPH Board to manage the financial affairs of MakSPH. It meets once every month to review income, expenditure and departmental requests. Any large expenses considered by the Finance Committee are referred to the MakSPH Board for approval before implementation.

  • MakSPH Research and Higher Degrees Committee

The Research Committee comprises the Dean and Senior Lecturers. It acts as an institutional review board, which evaluates and gives permission for all research proposals to be executed. Research proposal reviews take into account research principles like ethics, finances, including accountability and relevance to the public.
